How to Choose a Crankbait for Water Depth
Start with the strike zone
A crankbait works best when it spends time where fish are holding. Shallow square bills are designed to deflect through cover, while longer bills help a bait reach deeper water.
Read the water
Use brighter or higher-contrast colors in stained water and more natural finishes when visibility is high. Match size and profile to the forage when possible.
Contact creates reaction
Choose a bait that can touch bottom, rock, timber, or vegetation without constantly fouling. Deflection often triggers the bite.
